From a golf tournament to being in the field; with Jonathan Schmid and Jerid Carol

I’m joined by Jonathan Schmidt and Jared Carroll to walk through a Honduras missions trip that includes the Glow Center, mountain churches near La Campa, and the kind of gospel work that happens when you show up, work hard, and stay flexible. We talk about what it takes to get there after years away, why seeing the need firsthand changes the way you give, and how practical service like wiring a church can be worship in work boots.

We also break down the clean water filter distribution and why it matters so much in Honduras missions. Families often pull water straight from the river, and unsafe water can lead to parasites and long-term health issues. The team explains how the filter system works, how follow-up is tracked, and why the water distribution creates a natural door to share Jesus Christ without pressure or gimmicks. So we're gonna be talking about uh two different things. We're gonna be starting out talking about a trip that y'all recently went on and then talking about the golf tournament like we talked about last year. So to start out, uh brother Jonathan, can you talk about y'all's trip that y'all got on, how it got started and stuff?

Why We Went Back To Honduras

Um so this was in October of last year, and um I hadn't been back to Honduras since I think it was 2018 was the last time I'd been. And um honestly, I was just like, I'd let my passport expire, and um really I just started getting convicted for not going. And uh so I told the Lord if he'd make a way, I'd make it happen. And uh so, anyways, we uh I'd been really busy working, and first thing I did as soon as I had the opportunity was get my passport renewed, got all that took care of, and then within a week of having I think my passport uh renewed, we booked our tickets and uh started planning the trip. So, and then I I uh had invited, wanted to bring um Jared Carroll and uh Michael Denton. Mike's not able to be here today, he's in court, and so and he's not here to defend himself, so he's totally getting roasted. Yeah, it's gonna be fun. But uh anyways, two of my good buddies, and just really wanted to um introduce them to uh missions because I know how much it can change your life, and so uh we put a trip together and uh had a good time. Amen. Yeah, had a good time.

So, Jared, this was your first time going overseas, I think, right?

No, actually I've been elsewhere before, but this is the first time on a missions trip that I was um out of the country. Um it was definitely different to actually go into the villages and everything, because the last time I went, I went as a tourist. And so you kinda have, you know, you have the trip to and from, but you don't really see how blessed you are and how blessed we are to live in the country that we live in and and have the advantages we have, but I'm always thankful that Johnny um mentioned it and um invited me to go on the trip because I wanted

Firsthand Missions Changes Your Heart

to go. I mean, we did this golf tournament and uh I was praying about uh the Lord laid it on my heart to do something for missions, and I asked several people about what ministry like they would support, and Jonathan told me about God's little one, and I have to say not only um because I know those that are involved with it, but actually being there myself and seeing everything happen, um it's an incredible ministry and it's totally worth the support. And I'm more into it than I ever have been before.

Yeah, that's the thing. I mean, I knew if if you were gonna pour, wanted to pour into it your time and and resources, and you know, you gotta get a first hand experience. Correct, exactly. You know what I mean? So there's I mean, there's nothing like like there's people that you've heard it talked about, like, there's people that uh are just pure hundred percent missionaries. Like they may be called full-time or even part-time, like they go, they may make multiple trips a year. Um, then there's people that uh uh are just called to maybe just give. That'll never they'll never go. And then there's there's people like like you know, kind of like us. I kind of do both. I support and I you know try to make at least one trip a year. And so uh for them to be able to go and see firsthand it just amplifies the burden in the heart and the importance of making it happen. You know, and so uh it was it was a good it was a good time. Really? Really good time. We were able to go with FGT and uh they were they were doing a water distribution and water filter distribution, and um we had some other uh work projects we were doing. So it it was it was really good.

I wanted to go with y'all so bad when I heard Jared was going and then you going after being away so long, but I don't know, I had something going on I wasn't able to make it happen. But so going on your first trip, I want to ask you.

Yeah, you were in you were in school.

That's what was going on. I couldn't get on the street.

Yeah, yeah. I wanted to go so bad. So, Jared, before y'all went over what was going through your head uh before y'all got on the plane and stuff.

Expectations Before The First Work Trip

Well, what to expect was really I'm like I like I just mentioned, I've been as a tourist to another country, but like I we're gonna go to the villages, we're gonna actually go to talk to the people, and like we're not just seeing their country, we're actually going to to talk to them, to minister to them, to do what we can to and this was kind of a work trip. So um that's I guess kind of one of the things that God's gifted me with um is the ability to work, and that's the thing that I like to do. Um if given the opportunity to speak, I'll take it. But working is something that it just comes natural to me, and it it felt like that that was for the first trip, that would be something that um that would be the best uh to do since there was so much that needs to be done down there.

So Johnny, you told me uh before the trip that you uh kept messing with Michael about going and I want

Water Warnings And Wild Roads

you to talk about that.

Oh yeah, so oh man, this is so funny. So uh Michael's uh I told Michael different things, you know, and told him we talked about the food, and I don't really care for the food. And I told him, I said, you know, but we could we'll we'll find food to eat and uh you know it's no big deal. We'll go to whatever, go to some stores. And then I was telling him, I was warning him about, you know, because the water there is dangerous.

Yeah.

I mean it real it really is. Even it's got parasites, it's got garni what's that called garnia or uh anyway, gyarnia. And uh but anyways, it's a it's basically it's a parasite that you can get and it it'll mess you up. And um so I had told him, I said, you know, don't drink any of the water. Um when you you know, don't when you brush your teeth, just use bottled water when you're in the shower, you know, try not to get any water in your mouth. And so uh his wife, Chelsea, told me one day she walked in and he's taking the shower and he had like his mouth like gripped tight, like his lips just like firmly pressed together. And she's like, What are you doing? And it like he let out this gasp of air and he's like, I've made it 50 seconds holding my like holding keeping my mouth without like he was afraid to breathe in the water, and so we kind of we may have we may have amplified that just a little bit, just a little bit, and uh that's funny, but it was true that when he told me that I was like, Oh yeah, this cat's gonna be easy to mess with right now. And so, anyways, he ended up uh nobody ended up getting sick. I don't know. Amen. Um he got I think he got car sick on the way up pretty bad. Well, I get car sick every time.

I don't get car sick in the States anymore, but when I go over to overseas, I get sick every time.

Yeah, so like I I it's not as bad. Like um the last couple times I've gone, I've drove. And um as long as I'm driving, even if I'm in the front seat, I I'll have a tendency to get car sick. But um I was actually okay.

I didn't was scared to death though, because Johnny was driving, and the roads down there, like they're not here. Oh, it's a different road. I mean, it's tight roads, and you just pick when you pass. So, and Johnny was picking sometimes. I was like, Lord, please protect us. I was calling on the name of Jesus because we we had one instance where an 18-wheeler was coming barreling down on us and we need to get over and we have plenty of room.

No, we had we had one time when it was it was slow motion, and I got I was trying to switch and another car came over and I ended up getting hung up in between gears and stalled out. And Mike's Mike's a truck driver, and he's like, This man, this is wild. That was his word. I told him we need to have a shirt, man. So this that's wild. Everything was wild. Yeah. And uh, but anyways, um, yeah, the driving was good. Now something did happen when we first got to the airport.

Airport Setbacks And Sudden Leadership

We were waiting on, I think we got there. I flew at the same time. We met we actually met up with Joel in Houston. Um we flew from XNA and then um met with him in Houston. We're on the was on the same plane. And uh when we landed in uh San Pedro, um we were waiting on Brother Danny to get there. So me and Joel got our uh he got his rental, and then funny story, he got there and brother Joel did, and his credit card was expired.

To get his rentals, and so he had to use Christine's credit card to get a rental and uh and so that was kind of a little mess, but they got that all sorted out, and we got a couple cars. Well then Danny got there and um he went and got his rental car and then got a phone call. Like we were all loaded up, fixing to go. They had they had actually ran over to uh pick up some desks and stuff to take to the Globe Center some school supplies, and um they come back and Danny had just come out with his car or his truck and he got a call that somebody had passed away in his church. And uh Danny came up to me, he's like, brother, I'll you know, if I need to stay, I'll stay, but I I really need to go back. And I'm like, no man, just go, you know, we got we got it. Um brother Joel's here, you know, we're good. And so here I was, hadn't been there for eight years, and going to two different churches I'd never been to, wasn't it, you know, had no idea where they were at, and um kind of having to lead our little group, but we was with Brother Joel, and I knew you know he knows all that area, so it's it worked out good. And then y'all got Brother Louise, yeah, and Brother Luis was there, and so you know I hated it that Danny couldn't be there, um but it was still we still had a good time. And he ended up staying, uh staying the night that night, catching a flight the next day, and flew home. So, but we had a we had a good time.

So talk me, walk me through y'all's trip and stuff from day one, everything y'all did and stuff, and just tell talk tell me about your trip and stuff.

The Mountain Drive To The Glow Center

SPEAKER_03 11:30

Well, going up the mountain, you know. So long trip. So Joel, I think Brother Joel told us, oh yeah, well, it's it's four-hour drive or something like that.

Oh, it's and it's a wild four hours.

SPEAKER_03 11:41

The thing is, is going up the mountain, you know, obviously it's the same mileage coming down, um, but you're if you get stuck behind trucks, I think I think it ended up taking us nearly eight hours. It was ridiculous. What time we I mean, we got to the it was after dark when we got to the glow center. Oh, yeah. And which is common if you do that, you know.

We got two ways we'll do it. We'll either drive up halfway and stay the night, or we will go all the way up the mountain.

Yeah.

When you go all the way up the mountain, y'all, y'all found out it's exhausting.

Well, you're more out because I mean you're up, you know, you're up. It's a full day. You're up late the night before, making sure you have everything that you need, you know, double double checking your passport 25 times, make sure you got it. You know.

Uh probably up at, I don't know what time we got to the airport. It was early. Five. I think we met at five o'clock. It was early. So I know Mike, Mike said he got to the airport at didn't he say Chelsea dropped him off at like four o'clock? Yeah, it was really early. Like he was already he was already at the gate. Like he's already at the gate when we got, and it's X and A, so I mean it took us like 10 minutes to get there, but yeah. Um he's already sitting at the gate. We're like, dude, what time did you get here? He's like, Oh, I've been here since like 3 45.

What time was your flight?

It's like five, wasn't it? Like six, I think. Six or ten. Five thirty or six ten, something like that. Yeah. And so he had been there, you know. Yeah. And so I got I got a couple pictures I took there at that airport, I'll share with you. But um, but we just, you know, got our got our last meal. I told him I say find you some good food here at the airport. It's the last place you're gonna find any edible food.

The craziest thing is that it's like two hours as the crow flies kind of, I mean, not even really that.

Yeah.

But it's so windy if you look at it on the Google Maps and everything, it's so windy going up there. That's why it's not and I thought it was growing. Like, it's not looking at their progress or something like that. It's ridiculous. We're only we're only a third of the way there.

And it's been three hours. Yeah. Okay, so another this was this was actually pretty funny. So I didn't know when I was going on this trip bringing Jared that he was gonna be like my teenage son. Oh no. So we land in the airport, and uh I've got ATT and Mike's got ATT, and you had I got Verizon Network. He's got a Verizon Network, so he gets there and no service. No service. Outside outside of outside of a Wi-Fi.

Yeah.

I had Wi-Fi at the airport. He had a Wi-Fi at the airport, and so That's it. It was like a bad trick. It was kind of a bad it was kind of a bad time because he's like he's a property manager, and so you know, he was needed he could pass those chores off or whatever, but um you can you can go on and tell that because I have to have I need to have self service, and I thought I had everything situated.

I've researched it and everything. I'm like, okay, I got everything. Moment I land in Honduras, we're going through customs, and I try to pull out my phone, and it's not working. Has no cell service, nothing, and I'm trying to figure out what's going on, and I'm like trying to pull stuff up. So I'm able to connect to the network there, and I'm like, I don't really want to do that because you know, this is Honduras. Um, like I don't know if somebody's gonna hack me if I get into this public network and all this kind of stuff, so I'm like turning it on and turning it off. So that's the overthink the overthinking that was thinker was coming out of the street.

The overthinking that was happening right there was just hysterical.

Apparently there was some underthinking that was going on because I didn't cover all my bases on that. But anyway, as soon as we left the airport, I'm like, now how am I gonna call my my wife? Um she's gonna want to know everything's okay. I can't be here for uh we were like there for a week. And so I'm like, she can't not hear from me for a week. How am I gonna do this? Well then I don't know if y'all offered it or if I thought about it, I was like, dude, do y'all have hot spots or something like that that I can tether into? So the whole time I'm like, hey, can I use your hot spot? Can I use your hey Michael, can I can I uh can I use your phone? Can I use your phone or can I tie into your hotspot? And they're like, yeah, uh, we didn't know that we were gonna have our little brother on the trip, and they're always giving me grief over the whole thing.

It's like, hey dad, can I play your phone?

Can I watch a movie?

And it got to where like he you could tell like he didn't want to ask, he would just kind of hang around. You need to use our phone.

Could I well now that you mention it?

Yeah, because at the time, even at the glow center, they didn't have they didn't have Wi-Fi yet. I think they have it set up now. Oh, they were setting it up there. They were set. We put up the we put up the uh Starlink while we're there. That's cheating. But uh it's getting too easy, but it still didn't have signal. Yeah.

That's like I remember whenever I started for it's it's getting like crazy up there because whenever I first started going the roads, you don't even know what the roads used to be.

Yeah, the roads are great all the way.

I want to talk to you about that the roads that are now that they used to be when y'all used to go. It's a totally different different thing.

SPEAKER_03 17:01

But when the military come in, there's a military base probably a little what like maybe 10 minutes from the glow center. Ten minutes from well, probably ten minutes from La Campa.

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_03 17:09

Um but all the way into La Campa until you get on the uh coming back out of La Campa to go to the glow center, it's good paved roads or cement roads. And um, so that m that actually adds cuts down on your time typically because I mean you can zoom. But um, because it used to be horrible from where you would turn off at that station.

Oh, it's the worst road I ever been on in my life.

And you're literally zigzagging and dodging potholes.

But it is so much, it's so bad, it's so fun.

Yeah, yeah. Well, that was talking about that, that was one of the other things I was saying. I didn't know what to expect. Yeah. Well, they have those checkpoints down to stop you or anything, but you could be you gotta close close your window, open your windows and stuff like that.

Police officers and military guys out there, and I'm like Jared's in the back.

I'm not I'm not sure what Jared's in the back, and like I would I'd be going, then I'd intentionally slow down. I'm like, I'm not making eye contact. And it's it ain't you know, it's just 18-year-old punks that's got a gun, you know. I mean, it's just you just gotta play it cool.

Yeah, yeah, they were giving us our time, like the new newbies. We were not sure what to expect, and we were like eyes wide open over everything.

Yeah. We got to the glow center, Mike. He was sick, he actually grew up.

Oh boy. I had a guy do that on me one time. That was the start of he h he held it all the way to the glow center, but as soon as we got to the glow center, he went over to the banana tree trees.

So talk me through y'all's days. What all did y'all do while y'all were there and talk about everything y'all did?

Wiring A Church And Hands On Projects

SPEAKER_02 18:56

So we uh basically we went to the Greenwell church at that point, and it had been basically the shell had been put up. So we still needed to do wiring and stuff like that. So we wired that church, and then um we went and stained what was the other, what was the one we stained Guanisapal. Guani Sepal. So uh we stained the door one day. Um we did some work at the Glow Center as well. Um distributed we were there when people were picking up the door.

Yeah, the first the first let's see. We went and did did the wiring. Yeah, we did the wiring the like the second first day we got there. And um Brother Louise took us up there. Actually, he took us to Guan Sapal Church first, so we could look at it. Yeah, which is up out of La Campa. And it's it's actually one of the more rugged roads I've been up um in that area. And then um he just showed us where that was at, like he was expecting me to remember how to get there. And uh and then we come back down, and I mean it's like a four-wheel low type road, and then uh straight up, straight, like straight, yeah, straight up, it's literally just uh it's pretty wider road than I was used to, but like it was like caving in on some spot. Yeah, had some big had some big ruts from the rainy season, and then we came back across and went to Greenwell's, and that's a rough road to get up there. And um, but Brother Luis was really excited about the Greenwell Church because it's the Lord's really doing some great things there. So we wired that up. Yeah, it's really pretty community right there.

There's a story about a village. We haven't done a uh uh podcast on it yet, but we're going to eventually, and it's the one that got flooded out and everybody had to leave the village. A lot of those people came down there. So that church is really cool because this is the first church that like we we've built churches up, but for me, this is the first one I'm getting to see built from the ground up because I I've got pictures from when it was started to where it's at now from y'all putting up all that stuff in there. That area before we got in there, I they don't have electricity yet.

I don't think they might have got it now, but when we was first there they didn't yeah, they put solar panels on there. Yeah, yeah. So it's they've got the panels installed. I think they got the windows in.

We just got a pastor not long ago for that church, and it's it's awesome.

Yeah. So we went, we did that one day, worked there a pretty good amount of day uh until three or four that afternoon, got it all wired up, and um and then uh you're part of the water distribution too. Yeah, the next day I want to hear about that after. Yeah, so we came back, we came back and kind of helped put some buckets together. Christine and um uh I uh not Isaac Gaspard. Uh Samuel. Samuel Gaspard was there, and brother Joel. Was this Shesser there? No. No, wasn't it just the three of them? And then they picked up I can't remember their names. She's a teacher. Yeah, I know you're talking about it. Um, but anyways, uh and then I don't think Dre wasn't there, huh?

No, he I don't think he had moved up there yet.

He hadn't moved there yet. So Dre wasn't there, but um we did that and went and uh helped load up all the buckets, tied you know, had to get them loaded in the trucks. I can't remember how many they took um to that church, and then FGT did a water distribution deal. I uh Samuel Gasparts boat and uh I'd love to hear that. Yeah, he did really good, and then uh I got pictures of Jared and um uh Michael helping helping lead in the worship and uh I think they did a kid song, and so I told him I said, Oh y'all I've done this, y'all jump in there.

Yeah, if y'all serve so walk me through the uh water distribution part and about the stuff because I've talked to Brother Joel about it, but from someone who's not had much experience with it, walk me through how they do their their

first and all.

You go ahead. So they had a bucket there, and it's amazing to me to see um the filter and how clear the water is when it comes out of there. And so they from what we witnessed, um they present the gospel with the the water distribution. Are you want me to explain like what I saw there?

Yeah, like how they do their stuff and everything.

SPEAKER_02 23:28

And on top of that, the reaction that was done. Well, they told us like you have to drink the water after you run it through the purifier because they were saying that they don't trust that they're I I I guess I wouldn't either, like what what is this? Like, it does look clear, but you're saying that this is dirty water, you're s clearly seeing it in a clear bucket that it's really, really dirty water, and then you turn it and it comes out clear. Prove to me that it's safe to drink and everything. So they said they had to do that. So um we uh they basically went through that that process of showing them how to do it, how to clean the filters to to backflow and and clean it. Um they went through they also had uh medication there and stuff that they present with that. Um and if anybody's showing symptoms and we you know we check them in and do serial numbers on each of the filters and all of that to uh make sure that we know who what family goes where so they can do follow-ups too, the pastors and everything. So that when they establish the churches and then they do the water distribution like that, it gives them a great way uh to get in to the community and get the people um logged and everything so that they can follow up.

It's cool because Brother Joel uh he's told me I haven't seen it yet, but I'm supposed to be he's supposed to be showing it to me for something. And they have all on his his iPad, he's got it to where he can go pinpoint every single church that they've done that at. They have it all on his own.

Every bucket is every bucket is best, yeah. You know, it's it's very well organized. Um yeah. And so basically you ask them like when you're logging their information, you ask them where they get their water. Um so we actually worked with a or was working with an interpreter doing that, which was pretty neat.

It's that it's the lady from down around San Pedro that helps teach.

And her daughter. Okay, yeah. Um, I can't remember her name. I don't even know. Real nice, awesome lady, awesome lady. Yeah, and so we uh, you know, you ask most of the people where they get their water, most of them's just getting it straight out of the river. And uh Christine does the presentation and uh she she drank it. And I said, Well, God bless you.

Should have made Mike drink it. Mike drank it. That would have been awesome. I don't I don't think he would have. I don't think he would have because I told him I said, I'm not drinking it. Actually, though, that's kind of hypocritical because in 2018, um, the last time I was there, I brought a life straw drink with or bottle with me that I took to Alaska, and I actually I drank water. Now it wasn't straight out of the it was out of the faucet at the group center. And I run it through that film.

That's the crazy thing, like even the faucet water you can't drink. Yeah. And it's clean, like it's clear.

Like when you're you know, the water's not like, you know, it's the water that you get out of your faucets and stuff, it's clear.

Yeah, but the parasites in there is killing so many people. The lifespan is way shorter up there.

If you're gonna clear your stomach up of these issues, and the thing is, is it doesn't just attack their issues, it attacks their gums, it attacks their teeth. You know, it's it's really it's a bad deal. It's very but um they basically they tell them look, you have to brush your teeth with it, you have to wash wash with it, you know, um wash your hands and face, um wash your dishes with it. And so uh it really is a great it's a great, great thing. And the way that they're using it to get in the door to present the gospel is what is so fantastic. That's the whole thing. Everything we do.

Yeah, and it's and you're giving them something so like yeah, you know, when they the people over there, like if they think it's a gift, they're more uh receptive, receptive to it than just trying to force something.

And that's the way they presented it was like this is a gift for you, but we have another gift for you. Yeah, and they talked about Jesus Christ.

And when they prayed, man, when they prayed though, I mean the Spirit of God came in that place. Because we were supposed to go to a church service and brother some things come up, brother Louise couldn't get it lined up, and so I was really I was really disappointed that Mike and Jared couldn't experience that because it is it is something that's different. It's special, special, but that service, I mean, the Spirit of God come in and you guys were able to experience just a short uh time frame of how the people pray and how intense they are when they pray. And and uh it was it was really cool, it was really good.

Bold Prayer And Simple Faith Lessons

I want that's something I want to ask you about to talk about the like the per the worship and the praying stuff and the singing, like how did it feel compared to back here in the States? How different did it feel?

SPEAKER_02 28:48

Well, that's one things that I testified at Brother Carl asked us to testify about our our trip and everything after, and that was definitely one of the things that I noticed that was different than here in the States. We seem to be a little bit more shy, a little bit more reserved about our stuff. That's one of the things the Lord's dealing with me about. I'm typically a really shy person. I can be outgoing at times, but I I'm not very super outgoing. And um as a result, a lot of times you don't you hold back a little bit. You don't do exactly everything that maybe the Lord wants you to do. I'm an overthinker too, so I analyze things down to the very smallest, like, oh shit what what will this be and what what that and all that kind of stuff and you can overthink it. But those people that's that's the thing is like You really can't do that over there.

I've never heard praying like that. Like, I mean I've I mean camp meeting is pretty pretty special. I mean what we're experiencing here now. Um just uh calling on God and and not being afraid for people to hear you pray and all of that kind of stuff. We hit we have people, you know, there's a tendency kind of whispering I don't want anybody to hear my prayer. This is between me and God and all that kind of stuff. But just to be able to just let go with boldness.

Especially there, nobody knows what you're saying. So I mean you can do it there and nobody knows like amen.

And that was freeing, I guess, in some some regards, but um I pray for them like they know I'm what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah. So, but yeah, that was they act like they do. That was that was one of definitely one of the things that I was impressed with. And like we were as we were driving down, Johnny made the comment, he was like, There's there's a lot of people here, and they just they they don't have all the busyness that we have. They don't they don't feel the stress that we feel. They don't overthink things. I mean, maybe some do. I I don't know them all personally, I can't say all, but you know, they don't they don't have the kind of life we as Americans have, and I think that's really I mean that's why they so freely boldly preach. I think that's why they may see miracles more than we do here, because we overthink things, we do things. But just to allow God, I mean simple faith. I mean, Jesus said when they tried to send children away, he said, Such is the kingdom of heaven, don't forbid them to come unto me. There's a lot that was to be said in that. Um we overthink things, we start analyzing things, we start trying to act a lot like an adult. We get too much adulting, I think, in America. But just to have a simple faith that's not crowded with all of the stuff of life, it really purifies the gospel, purifies praise, it purifies a lot of things when you don't have a lot of stuff pressing in on you and stuff. And that was one of the things that I picked up over there. It's like the word of God moves so freely there. And it I guess it can give confidence too that it moves so freely there that you're just like, you know, it's hard over here sometimes to talk. You can talk for years to somebody about the Lord, but they are so crowded with all of the stuff of life that it just doesn't really make an impact. But there um it just brings simplicity to the forefront. And the simplicity of the gospel that you can present it as a gift who are willing to receive it, right? The way that God intended it. Exactly. And we we make it a lot more like, oh, we gotta we gotta try to find a fantastic way to explain this, and blah blah blah blah. It's a simple gospel, it's it's a glorious gospel. That that's the biggest thing that I picked up there.

I always I I say two things all the time about Honduras. Number one, when you go over there, time stops. And it's just so relaxing up there. And the other thing that my Uncle Danny or my uncle Joey's always saying.

Well, usually I don't go on work trips that much. I'm usually up there for like preaching or something. I'll leave my preacher joke out right now. Please. No, but the other thing I say is, or my uncle Joey says is they don't have anything else. Like I've I've seen drugs up there, I've seen that kind of stuff. Like I've seen people on the side of the road.

Yeah, it's mainly alcohol, I think. But it's different. Yeah, it's different. If you do serve God, it it's different up there. Well, the people, the thing like you were talking about the busyness.

So like in America, we live to work. Unfortunately, that's just where it's at. Yeah. It's like it's like I gotta work to live. You gotta make stuff. You gotta make a dollar. Down there, literally, they work to survive.

And um, you know, that's the thing that always stood out to me. You got women, men and women coming home at dark, you know, because they work daylight to dark. Yeah. And so for just four or five bucks a day, maybe. Yeah. And uh you'll see them carrying home a bundle of sticks, you know, and that's their fire for the next couple meals that they're gonna cook right there around the house. And uh, you know, so it's it's survival in the mountains for sure. Yes. For sure.

Spanish Misfires And Mountain Meals

I didn't think about it, but um when he had a perfect opportunity to to let everybody know about the interpreter situation. Tell me. He didn't say anything about that. Tell me. Should I say it or are you gonna let everybody know now that the light bulb came on?

So I didn't know. Jared. I thought this was gonna be the first trip that I was gonna go on because Jared Jared made it sound like he was fluent in Spanish.

All I said was I had four years of high school and I had four years, four semesters.

Okay, so in my mind. In my mind, four years of Spanish in high school and a year in college, or two years. Four semesters, two years. You should be able to spit it, bro. At least a little bit.

So we get there, and I'm like, I can't even order the like all the menus are in Spanish, and I'm like, I know polio's chicken. I know polio's chicken.

I'll tell you one thing. What they teach at school and what they speak is different because they got more of a what would you say, like well it's a different dialect. It's a different dialect, it's always a different dialect because what they teach it at school is more proper. Right.

Spanish is Spanish though. Yeah, and Mike Mike was really letting him have it pretty good about that because he said, Man, we're I'm so glad we brought our interpreter with us.

We're over here just looking at the meaning of the airport and they're like, now what is that right there?

And everything was pollo. Everything was chicken together with the pollo. Because we know what that is, everything was chicken. And so, like, even when we said guys like chicken. When we said guys ball working, um and I'll share a short story about that too. I had to I had specifically told Brother Luis, I said, listen, bro, do not have them cook. Don't have them cook for us. We'll get something when we get back to the Glow Center, or we'll go get something to eat. You know, you know, we had we had some snacks. He ain't gonna do that. No, he's not gonna do that. In fact, he had brought down some breakfast, which was actually his wife had cooked for us, which really was good. Oh, his wife can cook. She can cook, and you know it's took care of, yeah, you know, but uh Mike still didn't like that food. And it was just it was just tortillas and eggs and beans and uh pork. And it was it was good. Well, we get up there to Guantanapal and we're working on those doors, and I told Brother Louis.

I'd specifically told him do not have them cook for us. And we got these doors tore down, and we've been sanding them down and re-varnishing them and getting them hung back up, and I look over, dude, and here's these women coming in carrying these Tupperware bowls. And I'm like, you gotta be kidding me. Because I knew what was happening. I mean, it's like it's like rude if you don't Yeah, you have to. You know, you have to sit on and eat. And the look on Mike's face when he seen them like setting the table was like, oh, this ain't good. This ain't good. And it was it was mountain spaghetti, like it was spaghetti with hot dogs. No, I don't know if they had hot dogs in it, but it was just spaghetti and beans and coke, I think is what they had. But the thing really that got me the most is like we didn't have our own silverware.

And like, so we're all sitting down eating, and me and Jared was eating some. I look over it, and literally Mike is like green. Like he's his face is like literally green.

And y'all terrified this guy before.

And he took, he only ate a couple bites, and he's like, I'm done. I can't I can't do anymore. I'm done. And it was it was literally making him sick. I gotta go on a trip with this guy. I got to do it. So he lost, I think he lost 10 pounds. Oh my word. Yeah, because yeah, like he did, he did not eat hardly anything. But uh, I told Brother Luis when I texted him, I said, dude, I told you not to let not to uh have him cook, and he just lol, you know. He knew what he did. He knew but that being said, Brother Louis, to me, Brother Luis, I'll say this real quick and we can move on. But of anybody I've ever met, um, you know, when you talk about somebody you, you know, that walks in the spirit.

That man of God walks in the spirit. I believe it. Uh more than anybody I've ever met. I agree. Like he's always got a he's always he always has a I don't even want to say he's wisdom, but I don't even want to say spiritual. He always has a biblical application or scripture to apply to any situation, no matter, no matter what we're doing.

You know the love of Christ and the concern for the people up there, it's just like next level. He is the essence of the Holy Spirit is just like all it's just like he's bold, walks in the spirit. Walks in the spirit, yeah.

Coming Back After Eight Years Away

Eight years. How was it going back compared to how it used to be?

Um the airport was new. Uh they had finally finished the remodel on the airport, so that was completely different. Um but everything else just kind of fell in line.

You know, um how was it seeing the glow center where it's at now?

SPEAKER_03 40:43

It was good. Um the roof had been redone um so it wasn't leaking anymore. We had we had sent down, I had a a um uh company here out of Saddam Springs, TH Rogers. I know they'll never hear this, but they donated, um they donated the ice and water shield that we so they removed all the tiles, removed the felt, put ice and water shield down, basically waterproof the roof. And um, that was a big blessing. That had been set down. It had been down there for years. Yeah. But they had had it, kept it stored, so it it was still good. And um so it was nice to for it to rain and not be not having leaks in the building. Um but it was, you know, it just it brought back a good feeling and you know, of like I don't want to go this long without going back. You know, I want to go at least once a year.

I went to I've been in that school for nine months, so I haven't been overseas for like maybe around ten months. Well other than your mission trip of cycle. And I but I miss Honduras bad. It ain't nothing like going back.

That's where your heart's at. And that's where my heart is, you know. I mean, it's like I told I told my my wife, Shelley, I said, you know, we just went to it on a trip. And I said, All right, you've been overseas, you've experienced now you need to get a dose of missions.

And so we're trying really trying to plan a trip. And so Danny uh I told Danny I wanted her to come and uh it was his idea to uh try to set up a women's conference. That was gonna be awesome. Women's conference in a couple different churches. And when I told Shelly that, she was really, really happy.

Really, and so that's a perfect trip for Shelly. We're really trying to get that planned. Yeah. And so uh hopefully it'll hopefully it'll happen.

So, Jared, going for the first time, expectations before, how did it meet expectations and just what was you feeling?

SPEAKER_02 42:42

I mean, like I said, I didn't know really what to expect. I didn't have any expectations at all. Um, but I did leave with a clarity a little bit more of what to expect, and I left with a hunger, like Jonathan said, to go back. Um I probably won't be able to do it this year, but um I do want to go back as soon as possible. That where it works out financially for me and everything. And um but well it never works out financially, you just gotta go. Well after I said that I wanted to take that back. I knew I knew Johnny was gonna jump on that out there. I'll jump on that one for you. Yeah.

I was surprised at how comfortable it was there at the Glow Center and they're adding more stuff to make it even more comfortable. So that very helpful on on that front. But I mean God's really blessed that ministry and you know Blessing is evidence of the effectiveness of the ministry. I mean, I believe that that God's doing great things there and He's gonna continue to do great things there. And I'm gonna be a part of it as much as I can be a part of it, you know, being there and in the golf tournament and all that stuff.

And I want to say too, that's been the golf tournament, him undertaking that has been a tremendous blessing to um to the work there because it that's it's it's like the probably the largest single um It's the biggest event in the biggest event for for God's little ones for sure. And it has become it's really I mean in two years we've raised 12,000. 12,000. He's got a goal this year, you know, we'll see where that where that goes. Um and a lot of people are really born into it. Um then I will say too, uh Jared's had a difficult year this year, and okay to talk about this.

Laney’s Story And Trusting God

And so uh Jared and his wife um had a baby and uh Laney and uh God decided to that he wanted to bring her home, and it was a really difficult um situation. I don't even want to say situation, that's kind of an underspeaking um just a tragedy, but God has used that tragedy in so many ways to reveal his self to them in ways that you know I can't put into words, they can't put into words, and I know the hurts there, but what was so powerful was that one of the first things, and I remember when Jared called me, I was power washing at our church here in Oakdale, and and he was telling me the situation, and one of the first things Jared told me was I feel like this is an attack from the enemy trying to hinder the golf tournament, and it wasn't about the golf tournament, it was about the ministry, yeah. But the the Lord is using that tournament and using Jared to um uh coordinate everything and get everything together to raise the money, you know, for the mission. And so that when that was like the first thing, one of the first things he said after realizing that Laney wasn't gonna make it, and um it just it just pierced, literally pierced my heart, man. And I I told I told somebody, I said, man, it's a good thing. I I had my glasses and I was just crying and praying and you know, praying God turned around, whatever. And and for whatever reason, God chose to bring Laney home. Uh she was here three days, I believe. Two days, two days, and um just a beautiful little baby girl, and uh uh we're gonna do something special in Honduras for Laney. I talked to Brother Danny about it, and um we want to do like a memorial garden there for Laney and for uh probably brother Cletus um people that have been extremely influential in Honduras, and this is and this is what was so neat. Like when I text, I text Brother Joel and I text uh Brother Luis and I said this is a situation that's going on, we need to pray, and Brother Luis immediately spread the word, and they they were crying out for Laney in the mountains of Honduras. That's powerful, and and brother Brother Luis even texted me because they're big on names in the mountains over there and meanings, um, as part of their culture, you know, not so much here, but he he literally had texted me when I text him, he asked, he asked me what her name was, and I texted her, text him her name, and and he texted me back a shining light, I believe is what he said. And then Jared later had even kind of looked that up himself and uh and in just that brief time um she impacted people even in the mountains of Honduras, you know, hundreds of miles away. And uh and I'll let Jared say something, you know, that was his baby girl, but it was it's just powerful to see how God can take a situation like that and in just that little bit amount of time have such an impact. And so I've just been thinking about it, and I called Danny and and and uh hopefully we can get this done and get something. I want to get something set up over there, memorial garden with some benches, you know, people want to go uh place to do devotions in the morning or pray. Something that's gonna stay well maintained, yeah, and not just for anybody that's associated with the ministry that passes away, you know what I mean? This is I know what you mean. This is for not even not even necessarily for Brother Daniel. Like Brother Daniel needs a building named after him. You know what I mean? But this is like this is like specifically for people that have in some ways seriously impacted the ministry. And she did and was never there. Yeah. But I knew how much of a burden Jared had for the mission when that was one of the first things that come to mind.

And uh little bit about that.

Before he does, I want to emphasize on something about that because I remember uh I kept calling him trying to get a hold of you. We did we took a little while for us to be able to finally get a hold, but I got a hold of you, and I'll I just all I remember you just telling me was just how good God was and how he had a plan. I remember getting off the phone and I'd be going talking to my mom, and I was like, it's just saying how strong and it really, really impacted me. And I just want to let you know what you're doing with this golf tournament really doesn't matter. And to anybody out there who you don't ever have to go on a missions trip to influence. Oh yeah. And I want you to go ahead and talk to me.

Well, I appreciate that, and all all I can say is the Holy Spirit, God is good, and it's definitely one of the hardest things that I've ever had to deal with in my life, and uh, but I just felt the strength of God and and I prayed earnestly and I believe in healings, but I also believe in the sovereignty of God, and I I testified in in Laney's service that I I didn't sign up for this in good times only. I said, I will trust you no matter what. I accepted him as Lord, as my savior. I accepted him as Christ, as the anointed one, the son of God. And and and what that, like he is the only way. I accepted him. And then I also accepted him as Lord, the sovereign ruler of my life, and the one whom I put place my trust. And something like this will definitely come and try to challenge that. It will. I mean, we one of the things, Sutton, we lost our first child in a miscarriage, and then prayed for years, or not years, but felt like years, for months and months and months to get pregnant again, and God blessed us with a child. And that um there's a song that's I Trust in God, and the bridge on that song says, I sought the Lord, he heard and he answered. And that has been my anthem ever since Sutton was born, that God heard and he answered. And I remember singing that the first time after Laney was gone. And immediately, like, something came over me and said, Do you really trust him? Do you really trust him? And I said, Absolutely. And that's the where we have to get. And through all of that, God showed me something, and I testified about this again at Laney's service. There were some things that were at work there, and though it you often wonder why a two-day old child, why why God would do that, it just seems purposeless. And like to the the natural man, we don't understand that. We don't understand what what could possibly be the purpose. But God showed me some things, and I'm yet to see all of the things that her life impacted just in the two days she was here, the way she brought people together in prayer. I've never I never knew that many people cared about us. I didn't I mean, we've got great friends, we got a great church, but the amount of calls, texts, prayers, I I know, I felt the prayers during all the midst of all of that stuff, and uh I know that there were prayers that were going forth. But God showed me one thing that he laid on my heart. He said, God, uh Laney's name means bright shining light, but her middle name was Grace. And so I clung to that in the moment when she was still alive and she was fighting for a life, that she's the bright shining light of God's unmerited favor. And I wanted to believe that that was the reason that she was placed on this earth was that God was going to heal her, and we would be once again testifying of how God was faithful and all that stuff. But God took that and he showed me that there's another side to that coin, that God's unmerited favor, like grace, God's grace is greater than what we can hold in our hands. And that was the that was the phrase that God gave to me. It's greater than that which we can hold in our hands. We want to hold on to the things that we can see, feel, we can taste, the things that appeal to our senses. But Jesus, when he came, he was trying to get the disciples to look at the things that are not seen, to place value on the eternal, not the physical. They wanted somebody, a Messiah, that would rule them from Roman rule and all that stuff, the things that they could see. We want to see blessings in our life. We want to see, we think as Christians, a lot of times, that we got a corner on the market of blessing. But that's not necessarily, we're not always gonna thrive. There's gonna be times we've got to survive. We're gonna have to hold on to what we have. And like when we're tested like Job, we gotta come through the fire, we gotta we gotta have that trust no matter what. And so grace is greater than that which that we can hold in our hands. And that's why I'm so passionate about the ministry, because I believe the gospel message is going forth. I've seen it, I know it's happening, it's happening in Honduras, but not only there, I want it to go to the corners of the world. He said, go into all the world and preach the gospel. It's an action, it's not something that we sit back and passively wait on, it's something that we put into action, and so that's my heart for the golf tournament is to provide the funds because we do have to have monetary things, even though we don't want to place focus on those things. We have to have monetary things to be able to get the eternal things, the things that we don't touch, or we can't see with our senses have with me, basically do that. So but that's that's my my vision, my heart is to make sure that the gospel message, because that is that's the root of all this, that's the heart of God, I believe. I mean, He wants to restore a relationship that was broken, and that is the simplest form of everything that we do on this earth, is that everyone knows, and even our lives, all of the gifts of the Spirit and all that stuff, they're all meant to get that relationship stronger, better with God. Right. And we as Christians, we are salt. We're supposed to live lives. He gives us the power of the Spirit to live lives that we ought to live so that we are Christ-like, so that people see in us and they thirst for the living water. The salt makes them thirst for the living water. And so in Laney's short time here, she was able to impact not only nurses but some doctors as well. And I spoke specifically about one doctor, and I'm praying for her salvation to this day. I don't know that she actually accepted the Lord, but I believe that a seed was sown that will go forth, and there was a purpose for her life, and if only that, but I believe there's so much more than that, and I'm grateful that God gave me the two days with my precious daughter, he saw fit, he did such a good job on her that he wanted her back. But I'm grateful that he entrusted me with her for those couple of days, and we don't I talked to Brother Carl the other day, and I'm sorry I'm going on and on about stuff that I've but brother Carl, I talked to him the other day about, you know, what kind of faith is it to have the kind of faith that it takes that the disciples had to count it all joy to be able to suffer for the cause of Christ. And I don't know that I mean it's definitely hard on me. I don't know that it's suffering in the way that you know other people like physical suffering and everything, it's a hurt, it's a pain. I don't know what it kind of faith it takes to live in a country like Afghanistan or where there's a lot of um I mean, I guess terrorist or whatever you want to say. There's a lot of persecution, that's the word I was looking for, really. Persecution. What kind of faith it takes to really say I count it all joy to be counted worthy to suffer with Christ. And I want to show that forth. I don't like I said, it's it's a terrible thing that we've gone through. And people would rank things in in things that you have to go through, but I just want to people to see Christ in me and let me reflect Christ and reflect that kind of attitude, to say, I count it all joy to be able to have this testimony and go through what it takes to have this testimony, and I pray for the strength to carry it faithfully and let people see that. But I'm sorry I went on and on.

The Hard Trip Home

Flight back um got to Honduras and our flight got delayed uh six hours. Somebody passed away on the plane and they had to turn away. Yeah, so on top of that, they had um uh TSA was shut down because of a government shutdown. And so Houston was just a dumpster fire and uh in in uh immigration, and then our plane, which was delayed, got halfway there and had to make an emergency turnaround, came back to the States because they had a medical emergency and somebody passed away. So we didn't end up getting back to Houston till uh we didn't get to Houston until 11 or something like that. It was late, late, missed our flight.

I was like, Lord, please, I'm ready to get back and see my wife and my daughter. I love the people over here and everything, but I'm ready to see them because I hadn't seen them in a while. And I was like, are we gonna how long are we gonna be stuck here? Because they were like, there wasn't any flight.

We were checking flights. I mean, we were check there was no flight, we couldn't get on a flight. We were basically all to the agreement of let's just get to the United, let's get to the states, yeah, we'll rent a car.

And you know, wherever. But like we couldn't even find a reasonable flight uh to even like Miami or anywhere. Yeah, and so it was like we didn't have a choice.

Like, oh y'all, y'all have experienced everything. It's not always like that.

Yeah, so I told them I said for these guys to to want to come back, um something special. They really did get the full they got the full package. Yeah, and I think it's impacted both their lives and uh because you know, we've talked about coming back, and both of them are like, yeah, let's get something planned. So hopefully can't pre see in the future. But thank you for having us on here and definitely share some stories.

Final Challenge And How To Connect

In this podcast, we talked about Jared Carroll and whenever his baby died. And we just he just whenever it happened, he just remained faithful and he kept trusting God and serving God. And I remember I got on the phone with him after it had happened, and he just kept talking about how good God was. And this is something that we need to take to heart. You know, we're all we're gonna go through trials in life, we're gonna face hard times, we're gonna face death, we're gonna face situations that are gonna try try us and are gonna be hard for us. But we have got to stay faithful in those times. We've got to remain faithful to God. If we look at the disciples, whenever they whenever they first got the Holy Ghost and stuff, they were working for God, everything was going great, they were having healings come up, they were God was doing healings through them, but if you look at it, the uh religious leaders took them and beat them and told them not to speak in the name of Jesus or teach in the name of Jesus. And they left from that with a threat, but they left worshiping and praising God, thanking him that they were worthy to suffer for his name. Are we that excited to work for God? So excited, so thankful that we get to work for God, that no matter what comes, that no matter what we face, that no matter if we have the feeling and the excitement or not, we love God so much that we are going to keep serving him. This is not an easy walk, but this is the best walk. This is a walk with the Savior who died for us, who is there to help us and comfort us through every trial. You'll never go through anything that God will not be there with you. You'll never face anything that God will not be there beside you every step of the way. Life might be hard. We might go through trials, but God is still faithful, and if we will hold on, if we will keep moving forward, if we will keep working for God, there's a reward at the end. Heaven's waiting for us if we'll just stick with it. I look at the story of Paul, and if you just look at everything he faced, from shipwreck to being stoned, to be put in prison multiple times, to when he died, he ran to the to where they chopped his head off. But when he died, he said, I have ran fought a good fight, I have ran a good race. Paul was willing to do anything for Christ. He was willing to even die for Christ. Whatever God needed him to do, whatever he had to face to do it, he was willing and trusted and worship God. Even on that shipwreck, he was still worshiping God. Even when the storm was going, he was still worshiping God. So I want to challenge you and encourage you to no matter what you go through, to no matter what you face, to matter what no matter what trials you go through, worship God even in that. Worship God no matter what you go through. Worship God no matter what you face. When my papa and my mama had three triplets die, God asked my papa, can you worship me even in this? Well, I want to ask you, if you're facing a trial today, can you worship God in this? Because if you can worship God, if you'll hold on, there's victory coming.
